The Effects of Atmospheric Turbulence on Astronomical Observations
نویسنده
چکیده
Turbulence in the Earth’s atmosphere is a major obstacle to the detection of planets with coronographic and interferometric methods from the ground. It limits the contrast achievable with high-resolution imaging and the precision of astrometric measurements. Atmospheric turbulence also determines many of the key design parameters of adaptive optics systems and interferometers: site selection, operating wavelength, aperture size, temporal bandwidth of the servo loops, and integration times. It is therefore important to understand how turbulence is generated in the atmosphere, and how its effects on the propagation of light can be quantified. This chapter gives a brief outline of atmospheric turbulence in the “standard” Kolmogorov model; more detailed treatments of this topic have been given by Roddier (1981 and 1989), Fried (1994), and Hardy (1998).

Data Preprocessing on Sequential Data for Improved Astronomical Imaging
Obtaining diffraction limited astronomical images using ground-based telescopes and sensors operating at optical wavelengths is currently not possible due to the effects of atmospheric turbulence. Adaptive optics is a mature technology that attempts to minimise the effects of atmospheric turbulence through wavefront detection and optical path correction in real-time. Our work involves the acqui...
متن کاملStudy of Clear Air Turbulence over Iranian Plato
This study was carried out using two sets of numerical weather forecast data and flight reports for Clear Air Turbulence (CAT) over Iranian Plato to find atmospheric flow patterns favorable to the formation of CAT. The numerical data include five months of AVN analysis with horizontal resolution of 1 degree(about 100 km) and four months forecast data of MM5 model with resolution of 50 km. Impor...
متن کاملAn Efficient Lucky Imaging System for Astronomical Image Restoration
The resolution of astronomical imaging from large optical telescopes is usually limited by the blurring effects of refractive index fluctuations in the Earth’s atmosphere. In this paper, we develop a lucky imaging system to restore astronomical images through atmosphere turbulence on 1.23m telescope. Our system takes very short exposures, on the order of the atmospheric coherence time. The rapi...
متن کاملImage Ellipticity from Atmospheric Aberrations
We investigate the ellipticity of the point-spread function (PSF) produced by imaging an unresolved source with a telescope, subject to the effects of atmospheric turbulence. It is important to quantify these effects in order to understand the errors in shape measurements of astronomical objects, such as those used to study weak gravitational lensing of field galaxies. The PSF modeling involves...
متن کاملOptical Turbulence in the Antarctic Atmosphere
Turbulence in the earth’s atmosphere severely limits the resolution and sensitivity of astronomical observations. The vertical distribution of turbulence in the atmosphere has a profound effect on the residuals after correction by an active instrument such as adaptive optics or a fringe tracking interferometer. It has already been shown that the South Pole has turbulence profiles unlike those a...
